Hysterectomy and The Heart

Hysterectomy and The Heart

1 in 9 women will undergo a hysterectomy in her lifetime. Patients are often warned that this surgery has been linked to potential heart problems but now new research offers some reassuring news.

A study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology concludes that having a hysterectomy with or without ovary removal in mid-life does not increase a woman's risk of cardiovascular disease compared to women who reach natural menopause.

Researchers followed more than 3300 women between the ages of 42 and 52 for 11 years. They compared cardiovascular risk factors in the participants both prior to and after surgery or final menstrual period.

While cardiovascular risk factors differed between the groups, the results did not suggest an increased risk of cardiovascular disease following hysterectomy with or without ovary removal.

The researchers say it is unclear why their findings differ from previous studies, but age of the participants and the fact that they excluded women who had hysterectomy because of cancer may be key factors.
