Diabetes Warning

Children who develop type 2 diabetes are heading for a future of serious complications, and current treatments aren't enough.

That warning comes from a team of diabetes specialists, sounding the alarm, after analyzing the most recent findings from the ongoing TODAY study, which stands for Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth.

The findings, published in a special edition of Diabetes Care, includes data from over 500 children, who began the study when they were between 10 and 17.

Overall, kids with type 2 diabetes are developing early and rapidly progressing signs of both heart and kidney disease, plus have poor glycemic control and even diabetes-related eye disease early on.

The greatest risk for hypertension was for boys with high BMI's. In fact, high blood pressure for the entire study group tripled, starting at 11.6%, and rose sharply to 33.8%! The deterioration of beta cell function, the cells that create and release insulin, is almost four times higher in kids than adults.

Bottom line, according to the researchers, diabetes behaves differently in kids, and will require creative treatment options that go beyond those for adults.
