Suzy Monford Named Head Of Innovation for Woolworths' 870 Stores in Australia and New Zealand

SAN ANTONIO, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Australia's largest grocery chain Woolworths is tapping one of the industry's leading fresh food and fitness consultants to take a key executive role in re-shaping product development and branding at all of its stores across the continent and New Zealand.

Suzy Monford, founder and president of Texas-based Food Sport International, a fresh food and consumer lifestyle consulting firm with global clients in grocery, restaurant, and health/fitness industries, will take on new duties as Woolworths executive Head of Fresh Product and Concept Development.

Monford will develop products and concepts including meats, seafood, produce, deli, prepared foods, bakery, catering, coffee shops and restaurants for more than 870 Woolworths grocery stores and supermarkets.

"I'm looking forward to this opportunity to help the storied Woolworths brand continue to lead and innovate the grocery retail industry on a global scale," says Monford.

Woolworths began as a single basement store in Sydney nine decades ago. Positioned for more than a quarter century as "Australia's fresh food people," Woolworths proudly touts the fact that 100 percent of its fresh meat and poultry and 96 percent of its fresh fruits and vegetables are grown and farmed in Australia. The company also owns and operates Macro Wholefoods Market and Thomas Dux.

"We take fresh food for granted in the United States, but in Australia it's a major challenge to bring fresh meats and produce to market," Monford noted. "It's a large continent with a sparsely inhabited geographic center famous for its rugged terrain. Logistically, Woolworths does an amazing job of bringing quality products to people."

After a decade working with H-E-B and H-E-B Central Market, Monford left the largest privately held U.S. grocer to build a reputation as an international business executive with expertise in strategic operations, marketing, product development and merchandising for supermarkets.  Envisioning the trend toward healthier lifestyles, clean label foods, and the need to transform the economics and politics of food manufacturing, she became a certified holistic health coach, as well as an internationally certified fitness instructor in order to transform retail paradigms.

Among her first duties at Woolworths, Monford says, she'll build a foundation with "fun, seasonal pushes to showcase the extraordinary local harvest. That could be in local produce; in meats or wine."
