Losing It in 2013

OK, so the calendar now says January and those jeans aren't getting any looser. It's time to tackle those extra 2012 pounds.

Experts at the National Weight Control Registry and Loyola University Health System offer these tips that can make all the difference in your diet success.

  • Start by eating breakfast. "Breaking the fast" within one hour of waking up can boost your metabolism by 20-percent for the rest of the day.
  • Make sure you keep an accurate food log, so you can track exactly what you're eating. Many of us underestimate the number of calories we consume.
  • Get moving each and every day. An hour a day of moderate physical activity is the recommendation but it doesn't have to be done all at once. Three, brisk 20 minute walks with the dog offer the same benefit.
  • Turn off the TV. According to the Registry, most successful dieters watch fewer than 10-hours a week.
  • Measure your progress using a good, old fashioned method, the bathroom scale. Knowing that number will help you adjust your eating accordingly.
  • Finally, set a realistic goal. 10-percent of your body weight is a good place to start.

I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV, with the information you need to protect your health.
