Lose Weight, Lose a Risk

Lose Weight, Lose a Risk

Just a little weight loss might have a real impact on your risk of getting cancer.

Two common problems in today's world - obesity and too much time sitting down - can increase your risk of cancer. Experts think this could be due to the extra inflammation they can cause in the body.

In a new study from the journal Cancer Research, a group of older women who were overweight or obese tried to lose 10 percent of their weight by cutting calories, exercising, or doing both. Other women were asked to just go about their usual routines.

At the end of the year, levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, fell by 36 percent in the diet-only group. It fell by nearly 42 percent in the diet and exercise group. Women didn't have to lose a lot of weight to see a benefit. Those who lost just 5 percent of their weight through diet or diet and exercise, which is only 8 pounds for a woman who weighs 160, saw a decrease in several inflammatory markers.

According to these researchers, these improvements could cause the women's risk of cancer to drop, as well! Helping to arm yourself against cancer is but just another important reason to watch your weight.
