Trusting Your Designated Driver

How diligent are your designated drivers? A new study suggests they may be drinking on the job!

In fact, researchers found nearly a fifth of designated drivers are impaired themselves. The study included more than 1,000 bar patrons in a popular college district who agreed to be interviewed and take breathalyzer tests on six different nights over a three-month period. 165 identified themselves as designated drivers.

Approximately 40% of the people who volunteered to get behind the wheel for their friends had downed some alcohol, 18% registered blood alcohol levels at .05 or higher.

While the current legal limit for driving is .08, studies show the ability to drive safely is clearly impaired by blood alcohol concentrations of .05.

Not surprisingly, the researchers say the best way to play it safe is for any driver to just say NO to alcohol.
