The Psychological Effects of Stroke

When a person has a stroke, there are often life changing physical effects. Now, new research suggests the trauma lingers, too.

In fact, one in four people who survive a life-threatening stroke suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, similar to those who survive combat.

The study, led by a team at Columbia University Medical Center, looked at data from more than 1,100 stroke survivors. 23% developed PTSD symptoms within the first year after their attack. 11% still had symptoms more than a year later.

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the top cause of disability in the United States.

The researchers say there are good treatments for PTSD and are calling on physicians to keep an eye out for any traumatic fallout including depression, anxiety, nightmares and high blood pressure.
